We are in the midst of an outburst of national attention directed at queer partnerships and families. Same-sex couples are requesting marriage licenses everywhere from San Francisco to Asbury Park, NJ. How are queer families challenging traditional limits and meanings of families and their place in our legal, social, and political frameworks?
What roles have policy debates and queer movements played in defining 'family?' What kinds of queer experiences have challenged definitions, pushed boundaries, and queered the institution of family itself? How can queer families be explored historically to illuminate the present debates?
You are invited to attend the 16th Annual Sager Symposium to explore these questions and more. This symposium will offer opportunities to reflect upon recent policy changes regarding queer families and meet others who are challenging and reconstructing the nuclear family and the picket fence to reflect our identities and ideologies.
The symposium will include speakers, an exhibit, performances, and a panel to explore the visions and experiences of queer families.
Featuring:
* Dan Savage, author of the nationally-syndicated sex column "Savage Love" and "The Kid: What Happened After My Boyfriend and I Decided to Get Pregnant"
* David Tseng, executive director of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays)
* Ingrid Rivera, community organizer and consultant, speaking on "Queer Parenting, Welfare Reform, and Economic Justice"
