  • I'm only posting because Xanga sent me a threatening message that they'd cancel my account if I didn't, in order to free up my username. Gosh darnit, I don't intend on giving this up, even though I'm primarily using Livejournal these days, and even posting to that only sporadically.

  •
    Marriage is love.
As many issues as there are that I have with the current marriage craze going on, I still think that it is a practical and pragmatic step in the right direction.  It may not be radical enough for some of y'all, but it's still important to me.

We are in the midst of an outburst of national attention directed at queer partnerships and families. Same-sex couples are requesting marriage licenses everywhere from San Francisco to Asbury Park, NJ. How are queer families challenging traditional limits and meanings of families and their place in our legal, social, and political frameworks?

What roles have policy debates and queer movements played in defining 'family?' What kinds of queer experiences have challenged definitions, pushed boundaries, and queered the institution of family itself? How can queer families be explored historically to illuminate the present debates?

You are invited to attend the 16th Annual Sager Symposium to explore these questions and more. This symposium will offer opportunities to reflect upon recent policy changes regarding queer families and meet others who are challenging and reconstructing the nuclear family and the picket fence to reflect our identities and ideologies.

The symposium will include speakers, an exhibit, performances, and a panel to explore the visions and experiences of queer families.

    Featuring:
    * Dan Savage, author of the nationally-syndicated sex column "Savage Love" and "The Kid: What Happened After My Boyfriend and I Decided to Get Pregnant"

    * David Tseng, executive director of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays)

    * Ingrid Rivera, community organizer and consultant, speaking on "Queer Parenting, Welfare Reform, and Economic Justice"

    * "Ex Post Papa: Life as a Freelance Dyke Dad": A one-person performance show about "mentoring, gender and getting your parenting a la carte," presented by S. Bear Bergman

    * Ruth Vanita, author and professor, speaking on "Same-Sex Marriage and Its Antecedents in India and the West"

    * Loves Makes a Family: Portraits of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People and their Families, a photography and text exhibit

    * transparent, a screening of a film documentary in final production stages about the experiences of 18 female-to-male transmen in the U.S. who have given birth

    * A panel on activism and experiences around queer families in the Swarthmore and Philadelphia communities.

For more information, registration, a complete schedule, and directions please visit the web site:

  • So I went to the Queer Asian Pacific Legacy conference this weekend.  Needless to say, it was an incredible experience, just being able to be with so many other queer Asian people!  I went to a lot of workshops, most of which were ok, but not amazing.

    The keynote speakers were

  • Joo-Hyun Kang, former Executive Director of the Audre Lorde Project (I met the current director and I might be able to intern there this summer!!)
  • Urvashi Vaid, former Executive Director of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force
  • B.D. Wong, renowned actor
Joo-Hyun Kang was the most exciting...

I got community housing, so I stayed with this guy who is in GAPIMNY (Gay Asian Pacific Islander Men of New York).  He was really really nice, but I'm not sure we really meshed that well.  He was a bit older than me, and just talking to him was a little awkward sometimes - not sure exactly why.  GAPIMNY seemed to be one of the main driving forces in the organizing of the conference, so he was good friends with a lot of people in the steering committee.  It was interesting to hear about the organizing people

When we registered, they gave us a whole bunch of stuff!  I have a new travel mug (purple with a top that you push down on this tab thing to allow the liquid inside to come out), a Kenneth Cole fanny pack from amfAR, a bag from APICHA (Asian & Pacific Islander Coalition on HIV/AIDS), and assorted other stuff.

I met so many interesting people, I hope I can keep in touch.... though the guy that I had the biggest crush on (well, sort of.. I didn't really get to talk to him much) turned out to have been with one of the conference organizers for 5 years!!! Oh well.. I definitely learned a lot, especially about non-profits and organizing.
